Happy 4th of July — and Tips for a Smooth Summer Move from Next Step Moving
Happy Independence Day from all of us at Next Step Moving! The 4th of July is one of our favorite holidays — a day to gather with family, fire up the grill, and celebrate everything that makes this country great. It's also, not coincidentally, right in the heart of the busiest moving season of the year.
Summer is by far the most popular time to move, and for good reason. The kids are out of school, the weather is cooperative, and longer daylight hours give you more time to get things done. But with popularity comes demand — and if you're planning a summer move, a little preparation goes a long way. Here are our top tips for making your summer move as smooth as possible.
1. Book Early — Seriously
Summer is peak season for moving companies across the country, and the Eau Claire area is no exception. If you're planning a move between June and August, don't wait until the last minute to lock in your movers. The best dates fill up fast, and booking early gives you the pick of the schedule. At Next Step Moving, we recommend reaching out as soon as you have a target move date — even if the details aren't fully nailed down yet.
2. Plan Your Move Around the Heat
July and August in Wisconsin can get hot and humid, and moving heavy furniture in the midday sun is no fun for anyone. If possible, schedule your move for early morning when temperatures are cooler. Not only will your crew thank you, but you'll likely find everyone — including yourself — moving faster and more efficiently when it's not 90 degrees out.
3. Stay Hydrated
It sounds simple, but it's easy to forget when you're in the middle of a hectic move. Keep a cooler stocked with cold water and sports drinks readily accessible — for yourself, your family, and your moving crew. A well-hydrated team is a productive team.
4. Protect Your Belongings from the Heat
Extreme heat can damage more than you might think — candles melt, electronics overheat, vinyl records warp, and wood furniture can crack if left in a hot truck for too long. Pack heat-sensitive items last and unload them first. If you have items that absolutely cannot be exposed to heat, let your movers know ahead of time so they can plan accordingly.
5. Have a Plan for the Kids and Pets
Moving day is chaotic enough without little ones or furry friends underfoot. If possible, arrange for kids and pets to spend the day with a trusted friend or family member. It keeps them safe, keeps the move efficient, and honestly makes the whole day a lot less stressful for everyone involved.
6. Label Everything
With the hustle and bustle of a summer move, boxes have a way of ending up in the wrong rooms. Take the time to clearly label every box with its contents and destination room. It saves enormous time on the back end when you're trying to get settled into your new home quickly.
7. Do a Final Walkthrough
Before the truck pulls away, do a thorough walkthrough of your old home — check every closet, cabinet, drawer, and outdoor space. It's surprisingly easy to leave things behind in the chaos of moving day, especially in garages, attics, and storage areas.
